The Indian Institute of Technology Jammu (IIT Jammu) was inaugurated on 6th August 2016 and welcomed the first batch of students into the transit campus in Paloura, Jammu. In the initial phases, the establishment of IIT Jammu was done under the mentorship of IIT Delhi.
In 2018, IIT Jammu shifted its primary operations to the 400 acres of lush green land in Jagti village, just outside Jammu city, provided by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir for establishing its main campus. The main campus of the Institute is located on National Highway–44, 17 km from the Jammu Airport and 19 km from the Jammu Tawi Railway Station.
IIT Jammu has been rapidly developing its infrastructure ever since its founding. This young institute has developed the massive academic complex to facilitate the advanced research laboratories and necessary utilities, making IIT Jammu a hub for more than 2000 students to explore different programs in engineering and sciences.
Additionally, the academic complex incorporates the new generation manufacturing facilities of CNC, 3D printing facilities, tinkering labs, and other essential units of manufacturing for hands-on experiences for students.
IIT Jammu’s transit campus, Paloura, has emerged as a research-focused hub, emphasizing its Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF). The facility comprises seven advanced laboratories, including:
Microscopy Lab, Spectroscopy Lab, X-ray Based Characterization Lab, Optics and Chromatography Lab, Nanofabrication and Physical Property Characterization Lab (NPPCL), Thermal Analysis Lab (TAL), and Water Quality Testing Lab (WQTL). These laboratories cater to UG/PG students, research scholars, faculties, as well as external users such as industries, national labs, and regional academic institutions on a fee basis. The CIF plays a pivotal role by organizing short-term courses, workshops, and Faculty Development Programs (FDP) aimed at enhancing research capabilities in scientific and technological domains.
